Ms. Tasneem Djabarali (Executive, CSR Department): I am sure you all know we opened in April 2010, and the hotel has 2561 rooms, which makes us the largest hotel in Singapore. Hotel rooms are spread across three towers, 55th floor and we have famous infinity pool here on the top of the tower on the 57th floor, which is 250 m above the ground.

All different properties here belong to Marina Bay Sands, as a part of our property, we also have Arts Science Museum as well. We have hotel towers, Arts Science Museum, white rotaship building, whole shops, theatres and conventions center etc. Gardens by the Bay on the other side is not ours.

So Art Science Museum is the world first museum that combines the elements of arts and science together. Exhibitions we are bringing in are related to those elements. So we have NASA- scientists brought some exhibitions here. We have our permanent gallery, future world. This is the interactive exhibition- so there are lots of displays where guests can go in and participate in- they can colour something or you can scan it to come it alive, etc. So it is very popular for families, especially for children.

And as background of the hotel, we have over 9500 staff working 100 different departments. And they come from all over the world to work here, so we have over 50 nationalities working.

So other side of our property, we have Sands Export Convention Center, so that’s where we all have big exhibitions and shows. Many of them chose to have their own shows in Singapore at Marina Bay Sands. That also brings a lot of delegates as well, eventually stay with us and shop with us and dine with us. And we have various shops more than 170 luxury brands, and 80 eating/dining options including our celebrity chef restaurants.

Our CSR program is called ‘Sands for Singapore’. And it is committed to help Singaporeans in many different ways, and our remit is to help the youth, education and arts in Singapore.

Introduction of CSR activities by Ms. Tasneem Djabarali

For example, we provide training programs, we provide career advices, and we expose them to different hospitality elements. Because especially in Singapore, not many people want to work in hospitality industry or hotel scene, so we know in this way, maybe we can help to improve the employment levels of this sector in the future as well. And lastly, we want to effect and leverage the unique aspects of Marina Bay Sands, so we are such a big property, we have so many team members and staff, different entertainment options, different things going on all the time, so we are leveraging this more. We align with the government’s objectives such as education in youth in Singapore, and moving and elevating the poverty to better level.

We have a theatre where we bring many shows, and we have Arts Science Museum which do exhibitions. So these are two venues we leverage arts as well to give back. So some examples are, in Arts Science Museum, because there are many festivals in Singapore, we have eye light festival, which takes sometime in March and April every year, so we let them use the museum for festival outside, so they do projections and exhibitions of the area, so that is one of the examples. We are also heavy supporters of arts scene in Singapore, so we have contributed to the national Arts Trust, which aims to bring arts more accessible to local Singaporeans. So they have actually displayed some art pieces along Marina Bay daubery walk area.

An art work located in the deck of the hotel

They are located in just behind the escort area. Corporations donate, then there are a lot of art pieces. Another things in terms of arts, when Marina Bay Sands was built, architecture of the building incorporated many art pieces by artists, so we have Marina Bay Sands Art Path, which have about 12 pieces around the property. So sometimes when you walk pass, you wouldn’t realize that is an art work, because it is very well integrated. Like the outside of building (fasart), there is a metal flat which is unless you are told, you cannot see it is an art piece.

Q: If you build or create in such a way, do you receive any benefits from the government?

Tasneem: Government-wise, not really. Not specific advantage. It is something that we believe in from the beginning to support the arts and youth. So even for this, we work with local charity (one of our designated charities) called Art Outreach Singapore, so they bring students to our property, our Art Path. So they bring them to different Art Path to let them know about art work- what is about, what is the philosophy behind them. So it is making more accessible to young children here.

Tasneem: Now I would like to introduce you how we leverage on our property, especially with the arts. Because we have a lot of entertainment events happening here, so like celebrities and stars are coming. So one thing we do is called ‘In Conversation with’. Meaning is that, for example, famous directors, actors and singers coming here, and we bring youth to let them talk to them what inspires them, what difficulties they face, how they came to where they are now.

For example, we have a red carpet, early last year, captain America civil war actor came. That was when we invited some of our beneficially to meet the stars and present, talk and appreciation sessions as well. It is a Q&A session. This is the public session, and kids can come and ask questions.

Another one that I want to highlight is for Sands for Singapore, we provide career workshops. So this is something we introduced since early last year, and we offer every quarterly during the school holidays, where we invite secondary school students aged between 15- 17 years old to our property, and do like a hands-on workshop for them, by leveraging on different departments we have. And we give simple sessions like how to do contract, and we have back operation team coming into to teach sessions. But we have both, so we have back operation team coming to teach how to fold tables. It could be any different we have. So we have sustainability team to teach how to reduce paper waste and how to be sustainable. And then we have HR team, and they give an advice on how to go through interviews. So we have leverage different departments we have in here, a lot 100 departments.

Last thing I wanted to mention was Sands for Singapore Charity Festival. So Charity Festival is our largest signature annual event, so annual platform for fundraising and raising awareness for local charities. So that is when we activate our entire property, everyone in Marina Bay Sands join to give back to the society. Employees, hotel guest and everyone. So over this8-10 September this year, over this three days, we donate tickets for seats from arts science museum, Skypark to charity, everything. We also use our property to organize charity, conduct fundraising dinner party. And we sponsor Food &Beverage and venue for these occasions. For instance, we sponsor our convention center for them to conduct dinners etc, we have like concerts which all money go to charity.

We also hold our own one- all the profits from Food & Beverage going to charity as well. We organize this thing called ‘Play It Forward’, which a charity challenge, inviting public participants to join us. There are a team of 6 people, and they go around Marina Bay Sands, competing with different challengers to raise money for the charity of their choice. There are about 40 teams, and they go around Marina Bay Sands, complete different tasks. About 20 charities involved for this festival.

Event of Play It Forward (2017)

So before they participate, we give them a list of charities to choose from, who they want to support. After the result, for each charity, how much had they raised for each charity, first, second and consolation prize. The money will goes to the charity, so participants don’t get anything, it is a free participation, so the prize money will be from Marina Bay Sands. It is a matching system of one’s kindness and money.

During that festival time, we engage most of our efforts. So one of the last photo you see, is called Global Hygiene Kit Built, so it’s done across all of our property so in Las Vegas, Macau, and here Singapore etc,. What we do is we pack hygiene kits to be distributed to different places like Philippines international for those who need supplies because of nature disasters. So we had about 400 staff members coming together to pack 20000 kits.

We also conduct surveys in every two years, so we ask them how do they feel about Marina Bay Sand, do they think we are doing good etc. Survey results are very favorable. Survey is for our staff. 90% of staff are saying good. So this is some highlight from last year 2016, so our volunteer numbers have been increasing every year, so more and more staff are coming to join us for activities to volunteer.

Q: How long does it take for you to prepare this huge event?

Tasneem: Normally preparation takes 6 months. We are already looking for the fixed date for next year!

Q: Do your employees from other departments join you for the preparations?

Tasneem: For CSR team, it is just myself and my boss Joyce, so main people are just two. But we have a working committee, meaning that staff from different departments coming to help our preparations. So we are the one in charge, then for instance, museum people coming to help us with exhibition things, because we are not experts in some of areas, for instance like setting up of the stage, then we can contact convention center people coming to help us. We are the coordinator.

I would say we are very fortunate to get warm support from senior management, for very encouraging in support. Because without them, we cannot go ahead with initiatives. Also this philosophy comes down from our parenting company in Vegas, Las Vegas Sands. Mr. Chairman of Las Vegas Sands is also a big name in philanthropy as well. So his principles and message are coming down to us.

Q: Does your headquarter in US do this kind of CSR activities as well?

Tasneem: They have their own program called Sands Case, so they run their own. Because what we do is to suit the needs of our community in Singapore, and they have different needs over there too, so we run different programs.

Q: Also do you have any activities that tie up with the government? You mentioned earlier, you activities are aligned with the government policies.

Tasneem: I wouldn’t say the government per se, but like different government agencies. For instance, we work with URA for eye light festival around Marina Bay, we work with the community chess which is a fundraising arm of Singapore government. We make sure we are not too different from what the government want, but we do our own.

Q: Thank you very much for taking your time today.

Tasneem: Thank you very much!
